The Edo State House of Assembly has impeached Phillip Shaibu.
Shaibu has been consequently removed as deputy governor of the state, thus bringing to a terminus weeks of sustained anxiety on the sensitive issue.
The action by the state legislature found anchorage in Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended.
Shaibu was charged with gross misconduct predicated on alleged leakages of official documents.
A panel was set up by the Chief Judge of the State to investigate the allegations against him.
He and his counsel withdrew from the process after adverting the attention of the panel to a subsisting court injuctions restraining relevant authorities from activating impeachment proceedings against him.
The State House of Assembly on Monday drew the curtains on Shaibu’s tenure as deputy governor following the receipt of the panel of investigative panel constituted by the State Chief Judge to study the allegations of leaking state secrets among others that were raised against him by the legislature.
Recall that there a Federal High Court, Abuja had invited the State House of Assembly and Shaibu to show cause as to why the impeachment process should not be stopped.
The impeachment and removal from office have now happened ahead of the Abuja case.
Shaibu was on Saturday night in Abuja sighted by THE CONCLAVE at the 60th birthday shindig for immediate past minister of state for budget and national planning, Prince Clem Ikanade Agba, organised by his wife Princess Catherin Agba and the children.
At the event, which held at the international conference centre, Shaibu was seen moving from table to table exchanging pleasantries with political leaders of the APC in the state who were present on the occasion.
His body language would appear to point in the direction of his plan to align with the APC to upend Governor Godwin Obaseki’s schema to have Dr Asue Ighodalo succeed him on the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] platform through the September 21, 2024 guber poll.
