THE Ugandan government announced on Thursday that 23 of its citizens, who had been rescued from human traffickers in Myanmar, have been safely brought back home. The group, who had been held in Tachileik, Myanmar, after being lured with promises of high-paying jobs, arrived at Entebbe International Airport on Thursday, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
‘They were subsequently forced into cryptocurrency scams and smuggled across borders,’ the ministry revealed.
Vincent Bagiire, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, issued a stern warning to Ugandans about the dangers of unclear overseas labour schemes. ‘The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirms its dedication to protecting Ugandan citizens abroad and addressing human trafficking with the seriousness it deserves,’ Bagiire stated. ‘With collective effort and unwavering commitment, we can prevent and manage human trafficking, safeguarding our children, youth, and vulnerable populations.’
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasised the importance of vigilance and cooperation in combating human trafficking and ensuring the safety of Ugandan citizens working abroad.
