SOUTH Africa’s National Assembly Speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, announced her resignation on Wednesday amidst an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption during her tenure as defence minister. The decision comes following a raid on her home last month by investigators probing the corruption inquiry, although specific details regarding the allegations remain undisclosed.
In a statement addressing her resignation, Mapisa-Nqakula asserted, ‘My resignation is in no way an indication or admission of guilt regarding the allegations being levelled against me.’ The resignation takes immediate effect, leading to her stepping down not only from the position of National Assembly speaker but also as a member of parliament.

Having served as defence minister from 2012 to 2021, Mapisa-Nqakula’s resignation comes amidst mounting suspicion. South Africa’s state-owned broadcaster SABC reported allegations suggesting that she received millions of rand in cash as bribes from a former military contractor.
Following the raid on her residence, Mapisa-Nqakula took special leave. However, her legal efforts to prevent authorities from arresting her were unsuccessful, as confirmed by a recent court ruling against her. Despite the intensifying scrutiny, no formal charges have been brought against her, and law enforcement agencies have not issued any announcements regarding her potential arrest.
