Malawian Convicted For insulting President Chakwera

A MAN in Malawi has been convicted of insulting President Lazarus Chakwera after sharing a TikTok video featuring an animated figure with Chakwera’s face dancing in a humorous manner.

Sainani Nkhoma was found guilty by a court on Thursday for posting the video and accompanying derogatory comments about Chakwera in a community WhatsApp group.

Other members of the WhatsApp group in the central town of Mponela reported Nkhoma to the ruling Malawi Congress Party and the police, leading to his arrest.

Judge Talakwanji Mndala deemed Nkhoma’s actions inappropriate, scheduling his sentencing for next week. The judge warned that the punishment could entail a fine of approximately $3,500 or up to six years in prison.

President Chakwera, 69, assumed office in 2020 following an unprecedented rerun of the 2019 presidential election, ordered by Malawi’s Constitutional Court due to evidence of widespread irregularities. In response to his election victory, Chakwera jubilantly stated, ‘I’m so happy I could dance all night.’
