THE East African Community (EAC) is deliberating the prospect of designating April 7 each year as an EAC Day to commemorate the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, as stated in a recent announcement by the EAC.
According to the statement issued on Tuesday, EAC Deputy Secretary General Andrea Aguer Ariik Malueth articulated the commitment during the remembrance ceremony of the genocide against the Tutsi held on Sunday.
Malueth affirmed that a formal proposal will soon be presented to the EAC Council of Ministers for consideration. The EAC aims to assume a proactive role in preventing similar atrocities from recurring within the region, pledging solidarity with Rwanda and its enduring efforts towards reconciliation and healing.
The EAC leadership had previously demonstrated solidarity by erecting a genocide monument within the EAC gardens at its headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania. This monument stands as a poignant tribute to the victims of the genocide, symbolising the community’s shared resolve to confront and overcome the legacy of violence.
‘We are committed to devising strategies to eradicate the scourge of genocide from our region, fostering dialogue and introspection on the perils of genocide ideology and its denial,’ Malueth asserted.
He further commended Rwanda for its remarkable progress in the aftermath of the genocide, noting the nation’s extraordinary journey towards unity and reconciliation. Despite the enormity of the challenges faced, Rwanda’s strides towards healing and rebuilding serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration.
The genocide against the Tutsi, perpetrated by Hutu extremists in 1994, resulted in the loss of approximately one million lives, predominantly from the Tutsi community and moderate Hutus, within a devastating span of 100 days. The EAC’s contemplation of commemorating this tragic event underscores its dedication to fostering regional unity, peace, and collective memory.
