Borno NLC Demands Immediate Implementation Of Minimum Wage To 27 Council Workers

THE Borno state chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has demanded the implementation of minimum wage to the 27 local councils with review of workers; pensions.
According to the Congress, inflation and high costs of living with attendant removal of fuel subsidy have negatively affected workers’ productivity and progress in the civil service.
The demands were made, yesterday (Wednesday), in Maiduguri, by the NLC Chairman, Comrade Yusuf Inuwa to mark this year’s 2024 May Day celebration at Ramat Square, Maiduguri.
He however commended the foresight and commitment of the present administration under governor Babagana Zulum towards the plights of civil servants through prompt payments of salaries, pensions and other entitlements, as well as training and retraining of workers across the state.
Meanwhile, Comrade Inuwa said “the struggle of workers for democratic governance was very challenging, but appreciated governor Zulum for giving out palliatives and other supports NLC recieved from Borno state government at all times.
“But I want to use this opportunity to call on the government to settle all outstanding gratuities and other entitlements so that our retirees would have a sense of belonging and to face the enormous economic challenges of our time.
“This year’s joint May Day celebration, themed: ‘The People First’ was to uphold a strong advocate for democracy and good governance in the state.” He said.
Inuwa, however, commended Governor Babagana Zulum for the procurement of over nine dozen buses and taxis for workers’ commuting at subsidized transport fares.
The NLC boss reiterated that this year’s theme of May Day reflects the importance of workers’ productivity and service to humanity at all levels.
He noted that the celebration theme is currently reflecting on workers in the public and private sectors of the economy.
“Despite the various economic challenges, workers’ collective efforts have led to increased productivity in the civil service,” he added.
Inuwa continued; “We’re deeply concerned with the devastating effects of conflicts, and economic challenges by supporting government policies and programmes.
“To this end, I therefore, urge governor Zulum to implement the minimum wage to the 27 local councils, including an upward review of workers’ pensions”. Comrade Inuwa noted.
While responding to workers’ demands, Zulum, represented by his deputy, Umar Usman Kadafur acknowledged the cordial working relationship that exist between NLC and the present administration.
Kadafur said that, “Apart from numerous support NLC received from the state government, N2 billion interest free loan had been granted to workers to cushion the economic hardships and improve their living conditions.”
He noted that with the good working relationship with workers, they will continue to effectively implement government policies in the various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
