THE head of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has strongly condemned the recent attempted coup in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), emphasising the unacceptability of any actions aiming to alter constitutional order through force within African states.
The DRC military announced on Sunday that it had successfully thwarted an attempted coup in the capital city of Kinshasa, with army spokesperson Gen. Sylvain Ekenge stating that security forces had ‘neutralised’ the perpetrators of the coup and apprehended several individuals involved in the plot.
During the operation, the military reportedly discovered Canadian and American passports among some of the attackers, raising concerns about the potential involvement of members of the diaspora in the attempted coup.
In a statement issued late Sunday, Moussa Faki Mahamat expressed ‘great concern’ over the events unfolding in Kinshasa and welcomed the announcement by the DRC’s defence and security forces regarding the situation being under control. He reiterated the African Union’s stance against any attempts to disrupt the constitutional order through force, stressing the importance of upholding democratic principles and respecting the rule of law in African nations.
The condemnation from the African Union comes amidst heightened tensions in the DRC following the attempted coup, with authorities closely monitoring the situation to ensure stability and security within the country.
