The former US-based tennis champion, Tania Okpala has been rescued by the Anambra State government after she was found wandering the streets of the state capital.
A video of Okpala looking distressed and unstable went viral over the weekend on social media, prompting the quick response by the Anambra State Government to rescue and rehabilitate her before reuniting her with her family.
Following a directive from Governor Chukwuma Soludo and his wife, the Women Affairs Commissioner, Ify Obinabo, confirmed that the ministry immediately swung into action.
In a statement posted on the ministry’s social media page, Mrs. Soludo assured Okpala over the phone of the state government’s commitment to ensuring her recovery and reintegration into society.
According to Ms. Okpala, she is a US-based tennis champion from Nkpologwu in Aguata Local Government Area of the state, and she became a crack cocaine addict due to bad peer influence despite having received the best education in and outside the country.
Having lost her mother to cancer a few years ago, Okpala has been unable to cope with her demise. She also revealed that she has a 6-year-old daughter currently staying with her father in Nkpologwu and requested assistance from the governor’s wife to reunite with her daughter.
