Zulum Unveils Distribution Of FG’s Special Palliatives For 11,000 Flood Victims In Borno

GOVERNOR Babagana Zulum of Borno state has unveiled the distribution of Special National Economic and Livelihood Intervention Program (SNELEI) to about 11,000 victims of flood disaster across the 27 local government areas in the state.
The program (SNELEI) was initiated by the federal government through the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA under the leadership of the Director General, Mustapha Habib to assist flood victims in 2022.
The governor who was represented by Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Hon. Bukar Tijjani on Tuesday said, the gesture is timely, considering the massive number of agricultural inputs such as water pump machines, and Knapsack Sprayers, Rice and Sorghum, Cowpea seeds, Herbicide, Pesticide, Growth enhancer, as well as other livelihood interventions such as Grinding and sewing machines donated and unveiled to the vulnerable people and victims of flood disaster in the state.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Borno state, we appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the gesture, as this SNELEI would go along way in ameliorating the economic hardship and suffering of flood victims in the state”. Zulum said.
In his remarks, the Team Leader who is the Borno state Supervisor of SNELEI, said, the gesture is not only peculiar to Borno, as all the 36 states of the federation including Abuja benefitted from the exercise.
His words ” I am extremely delighted to witness this very important occasion of the flag off of distribution of support items to beneficiaries of the Special National Economic Intervention (SNELEI).
“Your Excellency may recall that the Federal Government approved this intervention specifically for people affected by 2022 flood disaster and those classified as the most vulnerable persons across the country.
“Following the flood, search and rescue operations were successfully conducted in several locations where trapped persons were rescued and given necessary care. Immediately after the flood incident, damage and loss assessment were conducted and relief items approved by the Federal Government were delivered across the States to complement initial intervention by the state Governments.
“Furthermore, based on the Assessment which were jointly conducted by the NEMA and State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAS), the Federal Government approved this
special intervention to assist vulnerable persons across the country and those affected by the flood to support their quick return to normalcy.
“This intervention is also expected to
drive the sustainable socio-economic resilience of the targeted most vulnerable individuals. NEMA staff were deployed to conduct the verification of the target beneficiaries in collaboration with personnel from SEMAS, State Agricultural Development project and other relevant Stakeholders. A total of 660, 884 households were verified and
targeted to benefit from this special intervention across the 36 States and the Federal Capital territory (FCT).
“Households verified and slated to benefit from the special intervention in Borno State will receive the following items: bags of Rice, Beans, Sorghum, Vegetable oil, Seasoning cube salt, tomato paste and millet.
Other non-food items include; Mosquito Nets, Nylon Mats, Plastic Buckets,
Toilets Soap, foam mattresses and detergent, Herbicide, Pesticide, Growth enhancer, water pump and Knapsack
Sprayer, while other livelihood items are grinding and sewing machines among others.
Earlier in his welcome address, the North East Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Alhaji Sirajo Garba Maidugu thanked the federal government and governor Babagana Zulum for the collaborative efforts in providing soccer to the less privileged ones in the society.
He then advise the beneficiaries to make proper use of the items to improve their socio-economic condition, even as he enjoined them to be orderly during the distribution exercise as all those verified will receive their items.
The Caretaker Chairman of Hawul LGA, Hon. Inuwa Bwala, his counterpart of Maiduguri Metropolitan, Tijjani Bolori, and that of Chibok, Umar Ibrahim, who spoke, lauded the intervention, particularly the involvement of local government stakeholders in the distribution exercise.
They said the involvement would ensure the items reach the beneficiaries intended.
