Tragic accident at Malawi VP’s funeral kills four, injures 12

FOUR people, including a pregnant woman, were killed on Sunday in the Ntcheu district of southern Malawi when a vehicle rammed into mourners participating in the funeral procession for former Vice President Saulos Chilima, local media reported.

The fatal accident occurred when a vehicle in the motorcade transporting Chilima’s body lost control and crashed into the crowd of mourners. Twelve other individuals were injured in the incident and have been admitted to a hospital for treatment, according to the report.

Chilima, who tragically died in a plane crash last week, was being transported to his home village of Nsipe in Ntcheu on Sunday afternoon. His burial was scheduled for Monday.

The sombre occasion turned into a scene of chaos and grief as the vehicle, part of the convoy, veered off course and struck the mourners. The accident has left the community in shock and mourning once again.

Local authorities are investigating the cause of the accident as the nation grapples with the loss of its former vice president and the additional casualties from this tragic event.

The funeral procession, intended to honour Chilima’s life and service, was marred by this unfortunate incident, highlighting the need for stringent safety measures during large public gatherings and motorcades.
