THE National Youth Council Of Nigeria (NYCN) has inducted President Ewemade Aigbokhan into the Nigerian Youth Hall of Fame for his excellent and unequalled contributions towards the emancipation of the Nigerian youths as well as being a thorn in the flesh of the oppressors.
The President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Comrade Solomon Adodo, in the award ceremony held in Abuja yesterday, encouraged President Barrister Aigbokhan to continue in his selfless strides to liberate the country from the shackles and manacles of anti-democratic elements who have been employing the rules of the thumbs to suppress citizens’ civic rights.
President Aigbokhan was the Speaker of Students Union Government of Ambrose Alli University. He later became the Acting President of Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Ekpoma. He ended his students’ activism as the Director of Sports and Social of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
He was the Financial Secretary of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Young Lawyers’ Forum Benin Branch 2012-2014. He also served as a Co-opted Executive Member, Nigeria Bar Association, Benin Branch 2016-2018, Member of Expert Group on Implementing the Access to Information Commitments of the OGP National Action Plan, Co-Chair on Access to information of Edo State Open Government Partnership (OGP), Member, African Network of Constitutional Lawyers (ANCL), Consultant, Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth, Nigeria, Member of Freedom of Information Network (Global) and Freedom of Information Coalition, Nigeria.
He expanded the scope of citizens’ access to public institutions and public participation in governance. He led a team of lawyers that enrolled inmates into voting class in Nigeria. He sued Edo State Oil and Gas Producing Areas Development Commission (EDSOPADEC) to disclose details of the contract of construction of police stations. Also sued Edo State House of Assembly over the failure to disclose Committees report on the work plan of the House and its quarterly supervisory report on World Bank loan to Edo State Government in 2014. He sued Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) on the expenditure of the Commission between the year 2012-2014. This case took right to information from a statutory right to a fundamental right and made right to information a self-standing human right in Nigeria. Also represented Registered Trustee of Unemployed Youths of Nigeria in a case against the Code of Conduct Bureau over public access to assets declaration by public officers. As a result of this effort, he was invited by the Arab Organization for Human Rights (AOHR) to participate in the 64th Session of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Right holding in Cairo, Egypt. He defended death sentence of two family member who were charged with murder and conspiracy. The Court of Appeal of Nigeria reversed the death sentence and enlisted the accused awaiting trial.
