IN a heart-stopping incident that underscores the challenges of human-wildlife coexistence, a mother in northern Zambia bravely rescued her two-year-old toddler from the clutches of a leopard, as yet another case of human-animal conflict unfolded in one of Africa’s prized wildlife habitats.
The harrowing encounter occurred on Sunday in the remote region of Nabwalya Chiefdom, nestled near the renowned North Luangwa National Park, known for its diverse array of wildlife, including Africa’s famed ‘Big Five.’
The toddler, now recuperating at Chilonga Mission General Hospital in Mpika District, sustained severe injuries in the attack, which occurred while the family was resting on their farm. Recounting the terrifying ordeal, the child’s mother, Tidah Mubanga, described how she sprang into action upon noticing the predator dragging her child, swiftly intervening to wrest the toddler from the leopard’s grasp.
Speaking on the child’s condition, Chilonga Mission General Hospital Medical Superintendent Bertin Kalengai praised the swift response of the medical team, stating, ‘We were able to stop the bleeding and save the child’s life. The victim is now out of danger and responding well to treatment.’ This incident marks the third wildlife attack handled by the hospital from Nabwalya this year alone, with previous cases involving crocodile bites.
Mpika District Commissioner David Siame, who visited the injured toddler, expressed concern over the recurring incidents and pledged to collaborate with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife to address the escalating human-wildlife conflict. ‘Our people are living in fear due to animal attacks, but the government is taking proactive steps to mitigate the situation,’ he affirmed, underscoring the administration’s commitment to safeguarding communities from wildlife threats.
As authorities mobilise efforts to prevent future encounters between humans and wildlife, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between conservation and human safety in regions teeming with biodiversity.
