Ghana Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has granted licences and accreditation to 51 cybersecurity industry players, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s efforts to enhance cybersecurity. This includes Cybersecurity Service Providers (CSPs) such as Virtual Infosec Africa and e-Crime Bureau, Cybersecurity Establishments (CEs) like Absa Bank and Fidelity Bank, and Cybersecurity Professionals (CPs) including Kester Quist-Aphetsi and Jeannette Quayson.
This initiative follows a troubling year for Ghana, with over 4 million data breaches, placing it ninth in Africa and 92nd globally. According to a report from VPN firm Surfshark, the country has experienced 12 incidents per 100 people.
The CSA’s announcement marks Ghana as the first African country and the second worldwide, after Singapore, to implement a comprehensive regulatory framework for CSPs, CEs, and CPs. This regulatory framework is a proactive measure to combat data breaches and ensure robust cybersecurity practices across the nation.
Albert Antwi-Boasiako, Director-General of the CSA, emphasised the legal implications for those offering cybersecurity services without proper licensing under the Cybersecurity Act, 2020. He warned that violators would face sanctions, including criminal prosecutions and penalties. Antwi-Boasiako urged those in the process of obtaining licenses to comply fully with the requirements and noted that the CSA is collaborating with the Public Procurement Authority to ensure adherence to these guidelines.
The CSA aims to license more providers and enforce strict compliance, with penalties for non-compliance. This historic step is expected to enhance the cybersecurity landscape in Ghana, protecting both public and private sectors from cyber threats.
