BETSY Obaseki, the First Lady of Edo State, has responded to recent remarks made by former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, vehemently rejecting any insinuation about her inability to bear children. In a strongly worded statement, Betsy Obaseki declared, “I am not a barren woman; I am fruitful and currently fulfilling purpose.” Her statement comes amid ongoing political tensions in Edo State, with Oshiomhole’s comments seen by many as a personal attack.
Recall that weeks ago, in a video which has now gone viral and described by many as “insensitive”, “callous” and “inhumane”, Oshiomole mocked the incumbent governor of Edo and his wife for being “childless” and incapable of bearing children.
Speaking alongside Mrs Ifeyinwa Ighodalo at a virtual Town Hall Meeting organized by Edo Diaspora Women for Ai02, which was duly monitored by Truth Live News, Betsy Obaseki emphasized that her contributions to society go far beyond biological definitions of motherhood. She highlighted her work in various humanitarian and social causes, such as her “Pikin nor go die initiative” which she considers a significant part of her life’s purpose. “Being fruitful is not limited to childbearing,” she noted, “It is about impacting lives and creating positive change in society.”
In addition to addressing the criticism, Betsy Obaseki offered a message of encouragement to women who, like herself, have faced the pain of miscarriages and stillbirths. She urged them not to feel discouraged or defined by their loss. “There is no point feeling bad,” she said, emphasizing that women can fulfill God’s purpose in various ways beyond motherhood.
