Warri monarch unveils royal society

As part of activities commemorating his one year of ascension to the throne, the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has unveiled the Royal Iwere Society to “serve as a hub to revive the Iwere identity and bring it to the era of the 21st century.”

Speaking during the unveiling at the Iwere Music Concert in Warri on Thursday, the monarch stated that the Royal Iwere Society would coordinate and organise a central resource centre for all Itsekiri, “with a view to mobilising initiatives that will promote Itsekiri identity, arts, history and cultural practices.”

He noted that “the Royal Iwere Society will be the hub to ensure that Itsekiri evolves” just as he urged all Itsekiri sons and daughters home and abroad to continue with what keeps them loyal and true to their origin.

The Olu emphasised that the Itsekiri had potential, noting that the choir that performed at the concert was an example of the treasure embedded in the ethnic nationality.

The monarch said, “This is what we can be and will be. We will submit ourselves to God and surpass what we are doing now. In many ways, this is something we have been looking at, and this shall inspire in you unprecedented greatness.”
