University Don, Urges National Assembly To Promulgate Laws To Back Domestic Workers

AN Erudite Scholar and Senior Lecturer with the Bayero University Kano (BUK) Professor Lawal Malumfashi has called on the National Assembly to enact laws that would give domestic workers all the legal backing and protection in the discharge of their function which is informal unregulated,

He decried the attitude of some Nigerians who are hell bent in exploiting those he identified as domestic Workers.

Making the disclosure on Monday at the openning Ceremony of a one day Round table discussion organised by Rosa Luxemburg Foundation on situations of domestic workers in Nigeria: Working conditions, Legal framework and Role of stake holders in mitigating buses.

According to him, the domestic workers are more or less subjected to Psychological, physical and Social degradation.

He said the domestic workers are faced with so many challenges such as Sexual abuse, malnutrition, humiliation, degradation, while economically poverty is their identity because they are detached from their families.

Professor Malumfashi who was one of the resource person during the discussion stated that domestic workers are sagregated at their places of work, molested by their masters, often denied food and barred from seeking knowledge.

On his part, Dr Muhammad Nuruddeen said domestic workers are belittled to the status of Second Class Citizens they are very much unconscious of their rights .

Dr Nuruddeen said domestic workers operate all time work no pay, they are subjugated to untold hardship they are unprotected, and their activity undocumented,

The University lecturer revealed that thousands of under aged and Elderly Women constituted Ninety percent of the unregulated work and are vulnerable to any kind of humiliation.

He said stakeholders must rise up and work out plans on how to free the Society of all kinds of domestic work or champion the course for promulgation of laws to guide their mudus operandi .
