THE United Nations Women (UN Women) Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Comfort Lamptey, has called for the inclusion of more women in decision making, noting that this will provide for women the opportunity of being at the forefront of discussing issues that affects them mostly.
Lamptey made this known on Thursday at the inauguration of WOMENX, organised by the UN Women with theme: Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.
She noted that WOMENX is poised at attaining gender equality in tune to climate change as this affects women especially those in the rural communities.
She said: “Climate change is real and seen around us from the heat wave to the drought, erosion and the like we experience. This changes impact hugely on women.
“It is even moreso for the rural women whose more than 60% workforce are directly affected economically with resultant effect on the children and family in extension.
“We need to bring women into the spheres of policy making, to make their inputs in decisions taken. As if more women are involved in policy making, decision taken will be more inclusive and issues women face will be brought to the forefront.”
On his part, UN Women Deputy Country Representative, Lansana Wonneh reiterated the need for women inclusion, adding that gender fight is a huge fight with many dimension.
According to Wonneh, most problems of the world are created by men due to their negative association of masculinity that turns men from feminism.
He noted that,”the first leaders we come across from birth is a woman our mothers, we only tend to change when we begin to associate with our male counterpart and this recreates a different culture for us which tends to remove women from the picture.”
Speaking Earlier, the Executive Director, Equity Now Initiative, Rinsola Abiola called for funding for women who aspire to take political positions as mentoring without finance still leave them at the same level and barely breeds any difference.
The Executive Director Youth Hub Africa, Rotimi Olawale, in the same vein, said it is necessary for men to support women, in economics, leadership, as well as, in sharing the load, as this will help in creating a conducive society.
He further reiterated the call for zero tolerance to all forms of violence, stating that “it is not enough that you do not indulge in violence with women but also make sure that your circles understand this and are in tune with it.”
