Ugandan Marathoner Cheptegei Burned After Petrol Attack

Rebecca Cheptegei secured victory at the 2022 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Thailand

Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei, who represented her country at last month’s Paris Olympics, is in critical condition after suffering burns over 75 percent of her body. According to local media reports on Monday, the injuries were allegedly inflicted by her boyfriend during a domestic dispute.

Cheptegei, 33, is currently receiving intensive care at a hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, following the attack that occurred on Sunday afternoon. Kenyan and Ugandan newspapers reported that she was doused with petrol before being set alight.

The Trans Nzoia County police commander, Jeremiah Ole Kosiom, confirmed to The Star newspaper that Cheptegei’s boyfriend, identified as Daniel Ndiema Marangach, also sustained burns during the incident. The altercation, which reportedly took place at Cheptegei’s residence in Kenya, is being investigated by the police.

Cheptegei, who finished 44th in the Paris marathon, frequently stays at her house in Kenya while training in the country. The shocking incident has raised concerns within the athletic community, with many hoping for her swift recovery.

Authorities have yet to release further details about the ongoing investigation into the attack.
