IN a significant move to address Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges, President Bola Tinubu on Monday appointed new leaders for two of the country’s most crucial security agencies: the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the Department of State Services (DSS).
The appointments come in the wake of the recent resignations of the former chiefs of these agencies. According to Ajuri Ngelale, the president’s spokesperson, these changes are part of a broader effort to strengthen Nigeria’s intelligence and security framework.
Mohammed Mohammed, a veteran diplomat with a distinguished career in the foreign service since joining the NIA in 1995, has been named the new Director-General of the intelligence agency. His vast experience is expected to introduce a fresh approach to the agency’s operations, bolstering its effectiveness in addressing national security concerns.
Similarly, Adeola Ajayi, a long-serving officer who has climbed the ranks within the DSS, has been appointed as the new Director-General of the secret police. Ajayi’s extensive knowledge of the agency’s inner workings is anticipated to be a crucial asset in countering the country’s various security threats.
President Tinubu has tasked the newly appointed leaders with the critical responsibility of enhancing the capabilities of their respective agencies to safeguard the nation. He emphasised the significance of these appointments, urging the new security chiefs to ‘work tirelessly to reposition the two intelligence agencies for better results.’
The president highlighted the essential role of intelligence in tackling Nigeria’s complex security challenges, including insurgency, banditry, and other forms of violence that continue to affect various regions of the country. With these appointments, Tinubu is signalling a renewed commitment to improving Nigeria’s security landscape and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
