THE literal translation of the word servitude may seem negative, invoking images of subjugation and powerlessness. However, in this discussion, we would explore the deeper, implied meaning of the word.
So, last weekend was a remarkable experience for me, as I had the honor of attending the official launch of the John Odigie-Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA) in Edo State. The Academy is a tribute to the first executive governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Chief Dr. John Odigie-Oyegun, a former Civil Servant turned public servant. During his speech, Chief Oyegun shared his remarkable journey as a Civil Servant.
His story touched on his early entry into the Civil Service, filled with significant decisions, temptations, and opportunities. He highlighted his journey of distinction, demonstrating competence, humility, focus, and determination. His exceptional dedication and service led him to the position of Permanent Secretary at the young age of 36, allowing him to work alongside different Ministers during Nigeria’s Military and Civilian eras. The essence of his message was centered on diligence and servitude.
Now, in today’s fast-paced, digital world, the youth’s willingness to serve has seen a decline, and those who do serve often lack patience. Humility and submission in service have been relegated to the back, and a strong desire for instant recognition has become the order of the day. While ambition and drive are commendable, it is essential to maintain the full richness of life’s progression.
Thus, as emerging professionals in diverse fields, we need to:
👉🏾 Rediscover the essence of servitude, embracing the opportunity to contribute.
👉🏾 Cultivate deep humility towards our superiors, embracing every experience as a chance to learn and grow.
👉🏾 Practice patience and submission in our service, consistently delivering our best.
👉🏾 Develop the courage to voice our opinions while respecting others, and gracefully accepting corrections.
👉🏾 Understand that life progresses in stages, and committing ourselves to navigate each phase diligently.
Again, embracing these principles does not diminish us, instead, it fortifies our character. Remember the anonymous quote, “If serving is beneath you, leadership is beyond you.”
