THE National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says it has streamlined its orientation exercise to ensure that corps members maximally contribute to community development (CD) programmes.
Alhaji Isa Aliyu-Wana, the newly posted Zonal Director in-charge of Sokoto NYSC Area Office told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the scheme had prioritised corps members’ welfare and community development activities.
NAN reports that the director spoke on the sideline of swearing-in ceremony of corps members for 2024 Batch B Stream II, at Wamako Orientation Camp, Sokoto State on Friday.
Aliyu-Wana, who is overseeing Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara States, enjoined the corps members to participate in all activities in the camp which were meant to prepare them for future challenges.
He said majority of corps members would be posted to teach in schools during their one year mandatory service to contribute to the state’s education growth.
In his speech. Gov. Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State, pledged more support to NYSC scheme and promised enhanced welfare for corps members posted to the state.
Aliyu, represented by the Chief of Staff, Alhaji Halliru Dikko, said the scheme had over the years played a vital role in enhancing national integration.
According to him, it has boosted the social, cultural and physical development of the country and urged the corps members to sustain the tempo.
He enjoined the corps members to use the one year period in promoting national unity in line with the fundamental objectives of the scheme.
The governor promised to prioritise their security and welfare irrespective of any part of the state they were posted to serve.
Aliyu urged them to be societal change agents by imbibing high sense of discipline and promote tolerance and understanding among all Nigerians.
He further enjoined the corps members to uphold the good morals acquired during the training, while encouraging them to interact and integrate freely with their host communities starting from the camp.
Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Alhaji Usman Yakubu-Yaro, described camp activities as regimental, adding that the combined orientation was directed by the NYSC national headquarters.
NAN reports that Chief Judge of Sokoto State, Justice Sa’idu Sifawa, represented by Chief Magistrate Isa Marafa, administered the oath to 1,250 corps members to signal commencement of orientation exercise
