THE Founder, Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria, (MAAUN) Kano, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo has solicited the support and cooperation of UNESCO Read and Earn Federation (UNESCO-REF) in the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed last week between the two organizations.
Recall that MAAUN and UNESCO-REF had on Thursday, 16th June 2022, signed a MoU on mutual cooperation for the development of the university.
Prof. Gwarzo made the call at a joint meeting with the President of UNESCO-REF, Prince Abdulsalami Ladigbolu and other top management staff of the university in Kano, Nigeria, on Wednesday, June 22, 2022
He said the call was necessary in view of the fact that the vision for establishing the university is beyond Nigeria and Africa as it is the desire of the founder to see that MAAUN becomes one of the best universities across the globe.
He said it is the desire of the entire management of the institution to ensure that the collaboration is one of the best so as to provide quality education for social and economic development of the country.
According to him, quality education remains the best legacy that could be bequeathed to the youth in the country.
Prof. Gwarzo noted that the current insurgency, kidnapping, banditry and other social vices pervading the nation are as a result of lack of quality and proper education among the youth.
Earlier in his welcome address, the President of MAAUN, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr noted that the MoU would go a long way in promoting internationalization as well as the vision and mission of UNESCO-REF.
In his presentation, the President UNESCO-REF, Prince Abdulsalami Ladigbolu said UNESCO-REF is committed to enhancing requisite competencies among Nigerian youth through various globally informed programmes and activities which align with the nation’s priorities and aspirations.
Ladigbolu was in MAAUN Kano, Nigeria, to formalize the MoU which was signed between the university and UNESCO-REF on mutual cooperation.
Ladigbolu, who spoke at length on the various components of the UNESCO-REF programmes, said the only organization that promotes staff projects is Read and Earn stressing that it also enhances global relevance.
According to him, the target is to reduce modern day slavery among graduates as they stand to benefit from four key areas of the MoU.
He listed the areas as, intellectual, leadership and economic capacity building in addition to the digital economy.
Also in his remarks, the acting Director Academic Planning and Quality Assurance, Dr. Nura A. Yaro said UNESCO-REF and MAAUN seemed to be working towards achieving the same goal and objectives.
