President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, approved the appointment of Olanipekun Olukoyede as the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
In a statement, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Ajuri Ngelale, said Olukoyede’s appointment is pending Senate confirmation.
Olukoyede, a former EFCC Secretary, is poised to become the fifth chairman of the anti-graft agency.
Below is the list of confirmed EFCC Chairpersons since its inception.
Nuhu Ribadu (2003-2007)
Nuhu Ribadu was appointed as the pioneer Chairman of the Commission by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2003 and was later confirmed by the Nigerian Senate.
Farida Waziri (2008-2011)
Farida Waziri was appointed as the Chairman of the Commission by the late former President, Musa Yaradua, in 2008 and was later confirmed by the Senate.
Ibrahim Larmode (2012-2015)
Ibrahim Lamorde was appointed as the Chairman of the Commission by former President Goodluck Jonathan and was later confirmed by the Senate.
Abdulrasheed Bawa (2021-2023)
Abdulrasheed Bawa was appointed as the Chairman of the Commission by former President Muhammadu Buhari and was later confirmed by the Nigerian Senate.
Olanipekun Olukoyede (2023-)
He was appointed as the Chairman of the Commission by President Bola Tinubu.
Those Who Served In Acting Capacity
Ibrahim Magu (2015 – 2020)
Ibrahim Magu only served the anti-graft agency in an acting capacity between 2015-2020, not as a confirmed Chairman of the Commission.
Magu was suspended for alleged corruption and abuse of office amid a probe by a panel led by Justice Ayo Salami.
Mohammed Abba (2020-2021)
Mohammed Abba also took over in an acting capacity from 2020 to 2021 and handed over to Bawa, who was appointed in 2001 by President Muhammadu Buhari as the acting Chairman of the Commission and was confirmed by the Senate.
