Lake Chad Basin Is A Source Of Livelihood To 40 Million, Says Ambassador Nuhu, By ABDULLAHI  RABIU, Kano 

THE Executive Secretary of Lake Chad Basin Commission Ambassador Mamman Nuhu has said that Lake Chad Basin is a  source of livelihood to fourty Seven Million People in Nigeria and beyond .
He maitained that the lake Chad Basin  is key to national economic development especially if fully harnessed.
He said  its vast fresh Water Resources spread amongst  Six Countries provides food to  Million people in Africa.
He said the group of professionals that ebjoy from the vast potentials of the Lake Chad include Fishermen, Farmers, both irrigation, and livestock farming .
Ambassador Maman Nuhu who was represented at the Regional Workshop by the Technical Director of Lake Chad Basin Commission Mr Hycinth  Benseke said there is the need for all the stakeholders to come  together and work out plans for the sustainability of the lake Chad basin because  ” it is our collective heritage.”
  The technical director said on the Transboundry Cooperation Mechanism for the sustainable Management of the Komadugu Yobe Basin, said hands must all be deck to ensure that it functions effectively.
He said the Lake Chad basin is spread between  Cameroon, Central African Republic , Chad and Libya and it has an  impact on the lives of many Nigerians.
The Executive Secretary stated further that the aim and objective of bringing the stakeholders of the Lake Chad basin to Kano is to brain storm on the challenges facing it.
He said the participants at the regional Workshop  are expected to  come up with workable plans and recommendations on how to manage the lake Chad basin better.
Mr Nuhu revealed further that the objectives of the workshop include among other things building the capacity of the stakeholders, on the joint Management of Resources of transboundary basins.1.
Speaking earlier, Mrs Mercy Odu Representative of LCBC Focal Point in Nigeria said part of what is expected at the end of workshop are that stakeholders should come to terms with  the importance of transboundary cooperation in the management of KYB in Nigeria and Niger.
She said it is also targetted at reflecting on the transboundary Cooperation  between Nigeria and Niger by ensuring that sustainability of the Komadoguo Yobe  River is subsistence and full with economic activities
