THE Inspector General of Police ( IGP) Alkali Baba Usman has said that the role of image makers in Policing the Country cannot be undermined due to its importance in shaping as well as protecting the image of the Police to encourage them to discharge their Constitutional roles without hindrance at all levels .
IGP Usman made the disclosure at the opening Ceremony of 2nd Batch of a Three Day fully Residential Intensive Capacity Building Workshop for Police Public Relations Officers on Strategic Communications held in Kano state on Tuesday .
The IGP who was represented at the Workshop by the state Commissioner of Police Samaila Shu’aibu Dikko said the workshop which aimed improving the capacity of Police PPROs across commands and formations of the Nigeria Police Force centered on understanding the road map to Police reform.
This workshop on “Strategic Communication” will hold from 21st – 23rd June, 2022, and is organized by the Presidential Committee on Police Reforms in partnership with UNDP and CLEEN Foundation.
He said “Without mincing words, Police Spokespersons play vital roles in managing information related to Crime and Criminality, and in ensuring that the public is kept abreast of required information that will ensure public safety, peace and stability.
Hence, there is need to equip Police Public Relations Officers with dynamic strategic communication skills.”
He ssid the workshop will avail the participants with skills and expertise in communication. It will also enable participants to acquire advance relevant skills to give appropriate response to enquiries from both the public and the media on the reform agenda of the Federal Government of Nigeria.
IGP Usman said the 3-days fully residential intensive capacity building workshop would also amongst other things impact Police Spokespersons positively, particularly in the areas of Police – Public partnership and Communication drives to improve criminal investigations, capacity building, community policing concept, and effective service delivery.
He used t participants of the workshop must be reminded that, to succeed as Police image makers, they must be versatile and have deep theoretical and practical knowledge of all aspects of Policing, covering Administration, Operations, Investigations, and Forensics, amongst others.
The Police boss therefore said the quest to continuously seek for knowledge is necessary and its one of the integral objective of the workshop.
” I urge you to take advantage of this workshop to interact and communicate with one another, share ideas, and expand your Communication skills, especially in responding to topical issues relating to security and public safety as and when due.
Experienced and professional resource persons were engaged and I am confident that they will bring the best out of you for effective service delivery.”
He ssid the Nigeria Police Force under the leadership of IGP Alkali Baba Usman will continue to remain committed to Training, Re-training and Human Capacity development to meet the demands of our dynamic society.
He said to achieve this, we will continue to partner with our important stakeholders like the UNDP, Civil Liberty Organizations, especially CLEEN Foundation, me to achieve the vision and mission statements of the Inspector General of Police.
