Global Warming: NEDC Begins Evacuation Of 1million Metres of Drainages In Six States
- Inspect completed Solar Powered Boreholes in Maiduguri

THE North East Development Commission (NEDC) has commenced desiltation/evacuation of drainages in the six states of Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa and Taraba in order to mitigate increase in flooding and other environmental degradation.
The exercise would cover a total of one million metres of drainage system which will not only complement efforts of the state governments, but also provide jobs and create healthy community.
This was disclosed by the Managing Director of the Commission, Alhaji Goni Alkali on Tuesday during inspection of some completed solar powered boreholes and ongoing evacuation of refuse dumps in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and Jere local government area of Borno state.
He said, the consequences of global warming associated with flooding is worrisome and detrimental to human health, hence the need for NEDC to partner with the six state governors in the region to ensure safe environment.
In an interview with Journalists after the inspection, he said, “We are all aware of the global warming and issues of flood all over the place. In the whole of the North East, we are trying to destil one million metres of drainage across the six states.
“In Maiduguri metropolis and Jere local government area, we are evacuating about 300,000 metres of drainage system in communities of Gwange, New G.R.A, Bulumkutu, Al-Ansar Junction to Giwa Barracks, Ramat Square/Dandal way among others.
“In addition, this exercise will be replicated to other states, which will provide jobs to our teaming Youths by our Consulting Firms.
“We have also inspect our Solar Powered Boreholes which we provided to communities on need basis. In Maiduguri alone, we have drilled over 50 functional boreholes, and more will be provided to ensure communities have access to potable drinking water, proper hygiene and sanitation.
“We just inspected Solar Powered Boreholes provided on need basis in Fessan, Fori Grave Yard, Lawan Bukar Nimeri Korongoso, Sir Kashim Ibrahim College of Education and many others, and you have seen how the people were so excited.
“We will also inspect our Solar Powered Streetlights today in Ruwan Zafi, Polo axis, Bunu Sheriff road, Mohammed Goni College of Legal and Islamic Studies (MOGCOLIS), Gidan Madara/Milk Shops general area and other places within the metropolis. This intervention aimed to provide security to our people especially in the night”. Alkali stated.
On some people dumping refuse indiscriminately, the MD said, NEDC is partnering with government and all stakeholders to educate, sensitize and enlighten the general public to desist from such act, this is in addition to plan by the commission to create a dump sites and establish a recycling plant, where all refuse would be converted to another important usage
