Irked by the open disrespect for existing laws of the country by parading what it labeled as an illegal running mate in Prince Yusuf Kadiri (SAN), a group, Equity For Justice has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to disqualify the Edo State Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate, Mr. Olumide Akpata from the September 21 election.

In a statement Tuesday in Benin after an enlarged meeting and signed by the president, Osama Andrew and general secretary, Osayuwa Kensington, they rejected the choice of Prince Kadiri instead instead of Mrs. Oluyinka Faith Alufohai, who they said is lawfully accepted by the dictate of the Constitution and also backed by the national leadership of the party

Osama and Osayuwa emphasised the need for the party national leadership to call Mr. Akpata to order before he completely destroys the party and reduce the its chances of winning the forthcoming in governorship election.

The president and secretary said it was very worrisome to note that a renowned lawyer with 30 years of practice and former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), doesn’t have regards for the rule of law as the commission  still parades Mrs Oluyinka as the running mate to Mr. Akpata, on their portal as at Tuesday morning.

The socio-political group argued that the continued insistence on Prince Kadiri by the governorsip candidate as his running mate is unhealthy for the party chances.

Ahead of the forthcoming election, they called on the national leadership of the party and the former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi to call the governorsip candidate to order.

They added: “Mr. Akpata’s adamant action confirms claims in some quarters that he could likely have been planted in the party to destroy it before the election. His action is also criminal according to the electoral law.”

The chairman and secretary accused Mr. Akpata of hijacking the process with the help of his supporters during the primary even when it was clear that the governorship had been zoned to Edo Central, thereby going against the policy of the party

They emphasized that same is now being repeated with him (the governorsip candidate), once again going against the choice of the party’s running mate.

“Parading some other person even when the issue is still been contested in a court of competent jurisdiction is inimical to the dictates of the party'” they said.
