MEMBERS of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma Chapter, have protested and condemned the pro rata payment of salaries of academic staff in public universities in Nigeria.
Rising from a special Congress on Wednesday, 16th November, 2022 at Ekpoma, members of the University’s branch of ASUU condemned in strong terms the pro rata payment of salaries and described the development as casualisation of labour and a violation of labour laws.
They called on the government to revise the action with immediate effect and pay all the arrears as well as full salaries for October 2022 in affected Universities. “ASUU, AAU, Ekpoma stands with the National on all actions against the denial of the full salaries of academic staff in public university”, they said.
They expressed their strong resolve to resist the evil agenda of reactionary elements in the country to bring down the university system in Nigeria as represented in pro rata salaries and casualisation of labour in public universities.
“This development is a threat to workers’ contract with their employers”, the Union said in a post-Congress release signed by Dr. Cyril Oziegbe Onogbosele and Dr. Willam Odion, Chairperson and Acting Secretary, respectively of the University’s Chapter of ASUU.
Reports indicated that the Congress tagged “Protest Congress” was marked by free speeches by union activists and leaders in the branch. They berated the Minister of Labour and Employment (MoL&E), Dr. Chris Ngige as the mastermind of the obnoxious action of pro rata salaries by the government.
In the release, the University’s branch of ASUU described Ngige as unfit for the office of the Minister of Labour and Employment. According to the Union, “Ngige is an anathema to industrial peace and harmony in public universities in the country”.
Insisting that Ngige must give way for peace to reign in public universities, the University’s branch of ASUU alleged that the pro rata salary was a ploy by the Minister of Labour and Employment to cow academic staff and scuttle labour agitations for good conditions of service and the general wellbeing of the University system in Nigeria.
The Union warned Ngige against playing God and pretending to be bigger than the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and urged Nigerians to resist his diabolical agenda to destroy public universities in Nigeria.
